OK you guys… I am SO excited that one of my designs was chosen for the Norman PAB Samo Ducky project. Like, really excited, like, I just won the first challenge of the season on Project Runway excited, way more than I thought I would be. I grew up in Norman, so being able to participate in creating public art here means a lot to me.

If you’re not familiar with the project, check out the Samo Ducky website that’ll tell you all about it.

My duck design is titled “Space Bubble Duck” and here’s my original submission, so you can get an idea of how it will eventually look:

The fiberglass sculpture was already primed when I picked it up, but it was also already a little dinged up, so I opted to put another coat of primer just to be on the safe side.

I’m glad I did. The second coat of primer smoothed it out quite a bit, and obviously covered some spots.

I was originally just going to use a plain Jane medium blue as the base coat, but since the final paint job is going to consist of layers and layers of color, highlights, and shadows, I thought this awesome metallic as a base coat would give it even more depth hidden under the layers.

Halfway in, I realized that was a good plan, I love the metallic blue.

In the back of my brains, I keep expecting Tim Gunn to walk in and tell me to make it work. Yes, I’ve been watching a lot of PR lately.

Two coats of the base color later, and this is where I’m at so far…

It may not seem like I’ve gotten that far at this point, but two coats of a semi-transparent takes a minute, and I mean… that color looks badass!

I love how this base coat looks, and tomorrow I am going to sketch out the bubbles and start the first layer of shadows and highlights… and of course I’ll post more progress, so stay tuned!
