This post will be a two-parter because I am still debating on a couple of different ideas for the table top. More on that later. I also thought these legs deserved their own post. 🙂

A while back I rescued this old rusty table from a neighbor’s yard on “big trash day.” Like everyone else in the world, (especially those who manufacture and sell them apparently) I LOVE hairpin legs, and knew I could do something with this table. It looks like it was an outdoor table, and maybe had glass on the top or something, I’m not really sure how that top worked, but anyway, the legs are awesome.

Table Hairpin Legs

My original plan was just to make a table top, and get some sort of brackets, or get a drill bit for metal to drill screw holes, to just mount the whole thing to the bottom of the table top. Not the best solution, but I didn’t have the proper equipment to cut it myself, so I was just going to go with it. Then it finally occurred to me that I probably have a friend or two who has the tools and ability to cut it for me. That’s where Tucker’s expertise comes in!

He drilled holes for the screws first, well, second, after he marked where he was going to cut. We decided about 5.5 inches would be a good length for each bar on top of each leg.
Then, he cut each leg from the table. I have GOT to get one of those saws. It seriously cut those legs like butter. But, I could also see myself cutting off a finger or something.
… and they all fall down.

Seriously, if you locals need anything cut up, HMU, I’ll get you in touch with Tucker!

The legs were covered in some rust and other unknown nastiness, so I scrubbed them with SOS pads. Luckily it was a really nice day today, and I could do this outside on the porch with the hose, and then let them dry quickly in the sun. I had to do some impromptu yard work because apparently our hose wheel thingy was covered in ivy. Yeah, I should probably take better care of my yard. Anyway…

Not really all that fun, but they looked way better afterward.

Now for the best part, of course painting them. I have a bunch of kick-ass spray paint colors I’ve been dying to use, so I thought for a brief second of doing something bright and different. Then I snapped back into reality, and went for black. Always black. I used 3 coats of matte black. I may add another tomorrow, but I don’t really think they need it.

One of the legs looks a little off from the rest of them, just slightly crooked. I appears that it was welded this way, and not something I can bend back into place. (I tried) So, I may end up just doing a 3 leg table. It’s not a huge difference, but 3 leg tables are cool anyway, so…

Annoying, but I still love you, hairpin legs.

Tune in next time to see what becomes of this table! Well, actually maybe not NEXT time, because I’m getting new airbrushes tomorrow, and I’m sure I’ll probably just play with those all day. BUT SOON.
