I haven’t posted here for a few days because I’ve just been learning and practicing my new airbrushes. I went with a relatively cheap starter-type set from Amazon. I chose this one because it has 3 brushes with it, with different features, so while I’m learning I can see what I like and what I don’t like. So eventually, when I’m going to spend more money on equipment I’ll know what I want.

Several years ago, I got an airbrush and started trying to learn it, and wasn’t instantly great at it, so I abandoned it pretty quickly. That is not going to happen this time! So even though freehand airbrushing, for me, is awkward and difficult, I really enjoy it, and I love the results, so I am going to just keep practicing and watching videos and learning the proper techniques.
I decided to use this board that I had already painted some blue circles and a yellow background, and can’t even remember where I was going with that one. Below are some pics of my first couple of days on this practice board, definitely some progress happening, but definitely a long way to go also! These pics might not look like much but parts of them are layers upon layers of practicing and fucking up and fixing it and fucking it up again. Fun stuff.
This was the first day I got them. Amazing talent.
I’m having a problem with water spraying out every once in a while, because it’s been extra humid around here lately. I’ve ordered a secondary in-line water trap which will hopefully help with that.
Second stage of my practice board…
Here is yesterday’s progress. Definitely improving, but I swear I painted that heart like four times. I would get it almost where I wanted it, then try to add one more little thing, then oops, start over.
I tend to over-complicate things, and I definitely catch myself doing that when it comes to airbrushing. In itself, it is a fairly complicated task, but I think if I just try to look at it as more like regular painting, rather than some sort of magical mysterious art form, it won’t be so daunting. I’m going to do an actual painting on canvas this week, and then I’m going to get started on my duck… stay tuned!
